The system is rigged, and we've got to fix it
Do you know what makes me angry? The fact that teachers pay a bigger share of their income in federal taxes than billionaires do. And it's not just teachers. It's almost everyone. We pay our fair share; billionaires should too.
Throughout this challenging pandemic, the richest have only grown richer. They've created and exploited loopholes in our tax code so they pay only a fraction of what they owe. It's wrong. We need to fix it. I believe that change can happen if we work for it.
It's time for Congress to raise taxes on wealthy corporations, impose a minimum tax on corporate national and foreign profits, impose a surcharge on stock buybacks, and more.
As income inequality rises in America, more and more families live paycheck to paycheck. Working families have to worry about the pandemic, rising inflation, job loss, and much more, all while paying a quarter to a third of their incomes in taxes. Meanwhile, the ultra-wealthy continue to get richer and richer, often paying an effective tax rate of as little as 3.4%.
I know the struggles so many families are dealing with right now. Laws that favor the wealthiest Americans mean that some are allowed to hoard their wealth, while many can't break the cycle of poverty.
Change is possible. Sign the petition and tell Congress to close tax loopholes for the wealthy. Let's make sure billionaires are paying their fair share.
